A musical exploration of the powerful elements that surround us—and how they are changing.
Featuring Steve Martland's Sea Songs, which draws from traditional sea shanties to depict the dangers of life at sea; John Frandsen's weather4casts: 4 seasons in 4 movements, which uses meteorological forecasts to look at weather as a 'common life condition’; and the title work, A Brief Descent into Deep Time—an exciting new co-commission from John Luther Adams which explores the ‘space’ between the environment and human culture, looking at time as measured on a geological scale.
As we examine our relationship with our environment, we realise that what once may have seemed far-removed is, in fact, something of which we are very much a part.
This programme will also include the world premiere of this year's winning entry of the Seán Ó Riada Composition Competition, Daragh Black Hynes' Behind This Light.
