Originally conceived as the Composition Workshops Project by founding Artistic Director, Colin Mawby, Chamber Choir Ireland’s youth composition programme for secondary school students was revived in 2016 as Composers in the Classroom.
The programme sees a selection of Ireland’s leading composers travel to schools across the island to coach students in the creative process of composing for an SATB (Soprano, Alto, Tenor, Bass) choir. Students are mentored by these composers as they create their own pieces of choral music, and have them brought to life in a gala performance by the professional singers of Chamber Choir Ireland.
“I remember that workshop like it was yesterday; an important and positive experience for which I’m so grateful.”
– Eímear Noone, first woman conductor at the Academy Awards, and past participant in Composers in the Classroom
Composers in the Classroom is delivered in partnership with the Contemporary Music Centre, with the support of the Arts Council / An Chomhairle Ealaíon.
