Next Generation Artists – Composers in the Classroom

Composers in the Classroom is an education project that brings established Irish composers into second-level schools throughout the island to coach students in the creative process of composing for a choir.

Approximately 50 students from 10 Irish schools work with some of Ireland’s finest composers along with singers from Chamber Choir Ireland through a series of workshop visits over several months, during which time they compose an original piece for SATB choir.  All compositions are recorded by the choir and a selection of compositions from each school are performed by Chamber Choir Ireland in a gala concert in the National Concert Hall.

Testament to the success of this programme in the past is its previous participants and now established Irish composers; Andrew Hamilton, Garrett Sholdice,  and Eoghan Desmond (winner of the 2015 Sean O Riada Composition Competition).

Following the conclusion of the 2016/2017 iteration of Composers in the Classroom, Chamber Choir Ireland and the Contemporary Music Centre are currently mid-planning stages for the 2017/2018 project.
